Download:
TEACHBoston is a teacher preparation program of the Boston Public Schools. Through early identification and support for high school students, we inspire and prepare young people to pursue a career in the field of education.

TEACHBoston Summer Academy Goals:

  • Expose scholars to compelling intellectual ideas surrounding teaching and learning in the urban United States;
  • Provide an opportunity for students to meet and interact with university faculty and come to see the university/college as an accessible place for students of color;
  • Provide an opportunity for students to be exposed to challenging college level teaching, supervised field experiences with k-8 students, while working to improve critical, analytical, and basic skills;
  • Provide an opportunity for students to participate in seminars that help them develop and practice leadership skills;
  • Provide scholars the opportunity to serve as role models for urban elementary students.

Program Description:

The TEACHBoston Summer Academy is designed for rising high school sophomores and juniors interested in exploring early childhood or elementary education, and BPS graduates who have been admitted to Wheelock College for the fall 2007. Students will have the opportunity to serve as mentors and teaching assistants for elementary-age students, while engaging in the academic study of urban teaching on the Wheelock College campus. Students will receive a stipend of $1000 for full participation and successful completion of the Academy.

In addition, each student will:

  • Get to know high school students from other Boston high schools
  • Have an opportunity to participate in college planning and readiness workshops
  • Have the opportunity to engage with leading thinkers in the field of education
  • Produce their own digital story that will be posted on the web
  • Participate in team-building activities on Thompson’s Island
  • Visit historic Boston sites and participate in other field trips
