APPLIED LEARNING

Through signature projects, students apply what they have learned and researched to a complex problem (e.g.: designing a product, improving a system, creating an exhibit, organizing an event).


Signature Projects are academically rigorous applied learning projects that are a hallmark of School to Career practice in Boston. Signature Projects are characterized by six A's:
   Authenticity
   Academic Rigor

Web Site Project
O'Bryant

Through the web design process, the students learn a great deal about teamwork, communication, and project dependency. They learn that poor communication leads to gaps in accomplishments and the need to spend extra time recovering from error. They learn that work they do can affect others, and vice-versa, and these affects can be measured concretely. They finally realize that strong teamwork can lead to even faster accomplishment and greater creativity. They can then apply this gained knowledge towards other complex projects involving teams, websites being the first of such projects.

School to Career Pathway Video Project
Brighton

The School to Career Pathway Video Project challenges students to synthesize their knowledge and skills of video production by using video and computer equipment to solve a real multimedia production problem. Students need fundamental knowledge about video production, script writing, camera operation and editing. Students write, perform, tape and edit vignettes for product. Students develop skills in teamwork, critical thinking and multimedia production. Students use a variety of video production tools: editing, camcorders, digital cameras, scanners and studio equipment.

Westie Water Wars Project
West Roxbury

The project challenges students to use video and computer technology to solve real problems facing real people today. Students acquire fundamental knowledge about water testing, writing, camera operation and editing. Students create 30 second PSA messages for broadcast on TV. Students develop skills in writing, editing, camera and teamwork, critical to employment in media. Students access Internet and various computer applications including video editing, video camcorders, digital cameras and scanners.

Business Plan (NFTE) Project
East Boston

Students develop a viable idea for a local business based on broad understanding of finance, market opportunity, customer need and organizational structure. Students can actually start their businesses to determine the authenticity of their plans. Students explore entrepreneurship as a possible career option and identify their strengths and weaknesses in the skills sets needed to pursue entrepreneurship as a career goal.

One in a Million Class Fund Project
Charlestown

Students apply what they have learned by listening to lectures, reading The Wall Street Journal Guide to Money and Investing and the daily Wall Street Journal, and by writing investment proposals which involve researching and analyzing a company and its stock prospects. Students make class presentations to convince classmates of the lucrativeness of their investment, and they also make presentations and share reports with adults and peers who have invested in the fund.

ETA / City Build
Mary Baker Eddy Entryway Structural Design Project

Dorchester

Students are asked to design and build a model based on industry specifications for the entryway and the landscape of the project. In order to achieve this goal, students gather all the information needed in the field of construction, structural design, and blueprint reading. They use the skills learned from the visiting team of engineers and architects to develop the models. To communicate the product to their peers and the engineering committee of the Baker House, they use PowerPoint as a presentation tool. Each group develops an engineering folder to organize and store the weekly notes and subproject. In the final stage of the project, students present their design to a committee composed of members of the construction firm.

From pH to Parkland Project
Charlestown

Students create an exhibit and group presentation to share the results of their research with an authentic audience, the Charlestown Waterfront Coalition. The presentation, exhibit and related report include recommendations for improvement of the park area.

Books and Bookings Project
East Boston

Students develop and market travel-related materials. Students will then organize and implement neighborhood and specialized tours.

Children's Books - Read Them! Share Them! Write Them!
Boston High and West Roxbury

Students investigate, read, discuss and reflect upon the importance of children's literature with a focus on child development to determine age appropriate interest, content and theme. They make connections between being read to at a young age and academic achievement. Students create their own books and read those books to young children at an after school program or learning festival.

Codman Square Lead Contamination Initiative
Dorchester

Students apply their knowledge and skills in two steps. First, they rigorously and scientifically gather information about soil contamination, using science, math, history and technology skills. Second, they use this information to communicate with the community and advocate for change. The products students develop include a brochure, poster, newsletter, presentation to the student body and presentation to a community group. Each team has daily work logs to be completed and team research responsibilities. The project culminates in classroom presentations.

Narrowing the Digital Divide by Building Computers Project
J.E. Burke

Students apply their skills and knowledge in order to upgrade or build computers using recycled parts. The final products are computers that can be taken home and a video that can be used by others to learn how to upgrade or build a computer. Students present their video to members of the school community and STC and PIC staff.
